Watch the annual Beer Can Regatta!

This Sunday is the annual Darwin Lions' Beer Can Regatta; a day of family fun and competitions on Mindil Beach. The main event of the day is the adult can boat challenge; a race testing the skills and wits of those brave enough to take a boat made out of beer cans out into the ocean. While most people visit to watch this event, there are a huge range of activities running throughout the day, so pack the family into the car and head down to Mindil Beach to take part in the fun!

If you’re heading to the 2015 Darwin Lions’ Beer Can Regatta, you’re going to need to fill up beforehand! We’ve found a great cafe to take the family for breakfast, before the fun starts at 10am!

Open from 9am on Sundays, pop into the Crepe Escape for a delicious filling breakfast for the whole family. Choose from savoury, vegetarian, seafood or sweet crepes, or pick something off their delicious breakfast menu. If you have a sweet tooth, we recommend you try the mixed berry cheesecake crepe, served with berries, cinnamon, white chocolate, biscuits and Philadelphia cheese.

If you prefer a traditional breakfast, order the ‘Wake Up Call’ with bacon, eggs, cheese, tomato and a hashbrown to fill your belly. Before you head off to the event, don’t forget to order a large coffee and you’ll be set for the day.

Now you’ve had your fill, it’s time to head to the Beer Can Regatta. With activities starting at 10am and the day wrapping up at 5pm, you don’t have to get into the water to enjoy this day out. Games and competitions include tug-of-war, the best novelty hat (made from cans, of course!), a kids sand castle competition and beach races. There is a small donation to take part in any of the adult events, but the kids events are free under 12’s, so it’s a great day out for the whole family!

If you plan on taking part in any of the water competitions, make sure you register by 9am on the Sunday morning so you don’t miss out on the big race. All money raised this year goes towards HPA Disability Services, so you’ll be having a ball for a great cause.

If you’re tuckered out and need a quick takeaway dinner to bring home with you, don’t go past the Darwin cafe below!
