Coffee Hub & Home
Just down the road from JCU is the Smithfield Shopping Centre. Nestled inside the hustle and bustle of the stores is Coffee Hub and Home. From the front, this is a home wares store that you wouldn’t think about visiting in your time of hunger. However, Coffee Hub and Home also offers a delectable breakfast and lunch menu, as well as some of the best coffee in the area.
Stop in before your morning lectures and fill up on crepes with strawberries and cream, or dive into an egg and bacon muffin for a savoury treat. If you need to escape from study half way through the day, make sure to pop back and order a fresh wrap or sandwich to snack on and keep your brain running for the rest of the afternoon. Whatever time you decide to visit, don’t leave without a smooth coffee in hand to keep you awake during this time of need. The best bit? CQ University
If you’re a long-distance student at the Central Queensland University, you’re probably well acquainted with the Cairns Distance Education Study Centre on Florence Street. While the new campus is being built just around the corner, make the study centre your second home while you’re preparing for your exams, and we’ve found the best nearby caffeine.
Flying Monkey Café
A ten-minute walk around the corner from the study centre is the Flying Monkey Café. This café is striving to become a “daily necessity for local coffee addicts” and creates an ambient environment, perfect for grabbing some food and continuing with your study. Bring your notepad and textbook and take a seat in the Flying Monkey Café after you’ve ordered a fresh cappuccino.
Choose from healthy menu items such as the Buddha bowl made up with three bean tabouli, falafels, roast pumpkin, mesclun, capsicum, pesto, sunflower seeds and hommus. This vegan, gluten-free dish is a local favourite, but if you’re after something more filling try the eggs bene wrap. This is the perfect study stop-in if you’re looking for a relaxing café with healthy, vegan or gluten-free treats to keep your brain fuelled.

3060 Café
For your caffeine hit at any hour of the day, visit 3060 Café on the Esplanade. Just a short walk from the study centre, this café is open from 6.30am to 11pm every day, so you can pop in for some coffee while you’re up late studying for that next exam. Pop in for breakfast and try the eggs bennie with avocado, or the toasted muesli to give you that boost you need!
If you’re struggling to stay motivated when the dreaded 3pm slump hits, run down to 3060 Café for some fresh ocean breezes, a hot coffee and a sweet treat to reward yourself for working so hard.
