3 family friendly fishing spots and cafes

What better way to spend the day with your family than fishing on the Sunny Coast? There is nothing quite like bonding over some fresh air by the water, with a rod in hand. Strike up some friendly competition with your kids and cast a line into the Sunshine Coast's beautiful waters. Pop down to these hot cafes for a fresh coffee and breakfast, or grab some food afterwards if you weren’t lucky enough to catch some fish. We've picked out three family friendly fishing spots and cafes on the Sunshine Coast, so all you have to worry about is getting the kids into the car and making sure you've got enough bait.

Coolum Beach

Locals and tourists love Coolum for a spot of fishing. Along the coastline, you’ll be able to wrestle with the likes of tailor, jew and the occasional snapper. Teach your kids the ropes at Coolum Beach in some of its tucked away capes and rocky outcrops.

After you’ve spent a few hours with the whole family throwing line after line into the ocean, no doubt you’ll all be starving. If you can’t stomach the thought of seeing any more fish, Coolum Charcoal Chicken is the perfect café stop-off for you. You can each order your own chicken or steak burger, or grab a family fest that comes with a whole chicken, potatoes, pumpkin, corn, peas, carrots, gravy and garlic bread to share.

This is a local hot spot for some fresh, healthy grub for the whole family. You can even try something different such as the banana and pineapple fritter for a sweet treat on the side. Grab your order to take away and sit by the beach while you recover from the massive day of fishing with the fam.
Where: 4a/5-7 Birtwill Street, Coolum Beach QLD 4573

Mooloolah River

If you are after a quiet fishing spot to take the family this weekend, check out the Mooloolah River. You can fish from a quiet spot off a pontoon and catch bream and whiting in this peaceful fishing spot.

If you’ve already caught legal size fish, you can grab some fresh prawns or calamari to cook up alongside your bream. If you weren’t so lucky, choose to dine in or takeaway some of the freshest seafood dishes on the Sunshine Coast.

This seafood market and café is renowned for it’s incredibly fresh food. If you’re planning a big fishing day with the kids, it might pay off to enrol in one of Point Cartwright Seafood Market’s cooking classes so you can learn how to fillet and cook that fish to perfection.

Moffat Beach

This is the perfect fishing spot if you have small kids and need a safe place to teach them how to fish. This easily accessible beach is the perfect spot to try and catch a few trevally and flathead, and the kids can run around and go for a swim afterwards.
