The best breakfast and coffee spots in Newcastle
The Newcastle City Farmers Markets are always bustling on a Sunday morning with fresh produce from local farmers, florists and coffee roasters. With the markets listed as a must-do for anyone visiting Newcastle, why not check out these cafés beforehand for breakfast or a coffee to sustain your shopping trip?
Char’s Café is just down the road from the farmers markets, making this a perfect pit stop on the way. Their breakfast menu will melt in your mouth with items like their grilled banana, honey and ricotta served on sourdough. If you’re after a healthier treat, why not try their acai or chia bowls alongside a freshly made coffee. This rustic café will certainly sustain you for a day at the markets, and if you just can’t get enough you can check out the second location they’ve just opened at 189 Maitland Rd, Mayfield.
Where: 82-84 Belford St, Broadmeadow NSW 2292
This is one of four locations owned by Snows Artisan Bakers. They will hook you in with those three famous words – all day breakfast. They serve Berocca, if you’re not feeling spritely, and a full list of delicious and filling breakfast items from creamed corn to field mushrooms with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. Snows also support other local businesses and stock Peaberry’s coffee seeds, which aren’t actually coffee beans but the seed of the coffee cherry. If you’re after a delicious breakfast and a unique coffee to match then you need to head here on Sunday morning.
Where: 144 Union St, The Junction, NSW 2291
The Source Café is a little further out of your way if you are heading to the markets, but this idyllic location on the river is definitely worth it. The Source Café prides itself on offering a variety of healthy breakfast options – items like the sweet corn & chive pikelets – you’re unlikely see anywhere else. Grab a coffee and breathe in the fresh river breeze on a Sunday morning before the markets.
Where: 74 The Lane, Maryville, New South Wales
Last but definitely not least is Cupcake Espresso. With a tagline ‘bringing a little NY chic to AU’, this small coffee and cupcake shop offers a lot of flavour. For the sweet tooth, we dare you to try and stop yourself from ordering a freshly baked cupcake while you wait for your coffee to be made. Or perhaps you’re a fan of a cold beverage in the morning? Then you need to check out their impressive shakes (including a Salted Caramel S’mores shake that tastes divine). It may not be the healthiest breakfast spot on the list, but surely that doesn’t matter when you’ll be spending time walking around the markets, right?
Where: 289 Brunker Rd, Adamstown NSW 2289
This list of highly regarded cafes is sure to take your day at the markets from great to incredible.
