Boardgames and cafes on the Sunny Coast
The Sunshine Coast Boardgamers
One of the official events this weekend is being hosted by The Sunshine Coast Boardgamers at the University of the Sunshine Coast. There will be boardgames being played from 10am to 5pm, and the event is entirely free (for all ages). If you have a favourite boardgame, bring it along, otherwise meet some new friends and play one of the club’s impressive collections of tabletop games. Even if you think you’ve seen them all, you’re sure to find something new at this registered event on the Sunny Coast.
Where: 90 Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs QLD 4556
Event details: 10am-5pm, all ages, free event.
If you’re hungry half way through the day, look no further than the Mr Mcgee Spaghetti House, located just a short walk from the campus. Students and locals rave about this venue and its incredible pizza and pasta options, and for good reason. If you’re shying away from garlic so as not to offend your boardgame partners, try their scrumptious tomato mozzarella and basil salad. Otherwise, throw caution to the wind and order their fettuccine with garlic cream sauce served with tender scallops, prosciutto, rocket and parmesan for a flavour-filled dish. If you’d prefer to get straight back to the action, grab a takeaway menu for an incredible selection of pizzas and pastas to go.
Where: 9/1 Scholars Drive, Sippy Downs QLD 4556
Urban Fiction, the comics, pop culture and art supplies store on the Sunshine Coast is also hosting a registered Tabletop event. Step into the cozy storefront to learn about some of the best new boardgames of 2015, and maybe even learn to play something brand new. This is also a free event, running from 10am to 3pm in store for hours of fun. Urban Fiction also host a games night every Thursday from 6.30pm if you’re busy for International Tabletop Day this weekend and don’t want to miss out on the experience.
Where: 35 Howard Street, Nambour QLD 4560
Event details: 10am-3pm, all ages, free event.
To keep your logic and problem solving skills sharp, pop into the Husk & Honey Cafe for a coffee and a snack. This is raved as one of the best coffee shops on the Sunshine Coast for its premium blend roast and consistent cups of coffee, so you know your caffeine will be top quality. On top of their single origin bean range, their food is also gluten and grain free for those with sensitive stomachs. Don’t interrupt a good tabletop game with a sore belly; check out their menu that changes fortnightly for wholesome food such as their chicken laksa or open beef burger.
Where: 18 Queen Street, Nambour QLD 4560
After the day wraps up, head to The Bison Bar in Nambour for games of a different sort. You can play board games here any night of the week, so bring along a copy of Cluedo if you want a tabletop game to match the venue. This art deco lounge bar is just intimate enough that you can still talk to your friends while offering a fun environment to indulge in a cocktail or beer. Just a short walk from the Urban Fiction event, this is the perfect way to celebrate International Tabletob Day in style.
