Get into the festive spirit with this holiday season favourite!

With Christmas just around the corner, it’s time to start honing your culinary skills. In order to master your Christmas pudding and avoid embarrassment on the big day, you need to get in the kitchen and start practising today. We’ve got the perfect traditional Christmas pudding recipe that’ll have the whole family coming back for more!

Christmas Pudding Recipe

Preparation: 45 mins

Cooking time: 5 to 6 hours

Serves: 12


  • 2-litre pudding basin
  • Sifter
  • Baking paper
  • Medium & large saucepans
  • Large bowl
  • Teaspoon
  • Tablespoon
  • Cup


  • 1 tsp of butter
  • 370g of mixed fruit (dried)
  • 70g cherries, quartered
  • 70g dried figs (sliced)
  • 70g dried pears (sliced)
  • 70g dried cranberries
  • 70g dried dates (sliced)
  • 3 tbsp finely grated orange rind
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1/3 cup brandy (substitute with white grape juice for a non-alcoholic alternative)
  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 1 cup self-raising flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp mixed spices
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 250g unsalted butter, melted & cooled
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 3 eggs, lightly whisked
  • Custard


Step 1

Grease up your 2-litre pudding basin with a tablespoon of butter. Line the pudding basin with sheets of baking paper.

Step 2

Combine all the finely chopped dried fruit (mixed fruit, cherries, figs, pears, cranberries, dates and orange rind) and juice in a medium saucepan over a medium heat.

Cook on a medium heat for around 10 minutes until the fruit is soft. Take it off the stove and allow it to cool for 30 minutes, before adding 1/3 cup of brandy to the mixture.

Step 3

Using a sifter, combine the plain flour, self-raising flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and mixed spices into a large bowl.

Next, add the fruit mixture, butter, brown sugar and eggs, then stir until well combined. Place this mixture into your pre-prepared pudding basin, then smooth over.

Step 4

Place the pudding basin with the mixture inside into a large saucepan, then pour boiling water into the pan until it rises to halfway up the side of the basin. Continue adding boiling water when necessary to retain water level.

Cook for around 5 to 6 hours until your Christmas pudding is ready.

Tip—If you place a skewer in the middle of your Christmas pudding and it comes out clean, then it’s ready!

Step 5

Remove steam from the saucepan and allow it to cool for 10 minutes. Serve with a side of custard, or you can serve your Christmas pudding with cream, ice cream or all of the above!
