Everything you need to know about foot reflexology.

Foot reflexology is a holistic treatment used to help speed up the body's regular healing process. It is a therapy using the natural alignment of the body, massage techniques and pressure points, which helps release tension and remove toxins that may be causing you pain or discomfort. We will explain how foot reflexology works, so you have a better understanding of what to expect from your first treatment. Whether you are looking to relieve stress or insomnia, reduce the severity and regularity of migraines or improve your general health, foot reflexology may be what you need. Read on to find out more.

What is Foot Reflexology?

Reflexology is the use of pressure and massage techniques on certain areas of the feet, hands, and ears, based on the theory that certain areas of the feet, called reflexes, are linked to other parts of our body.

How does it Work?

  • Trigger points in the feet connect to other parts of the body
  • Stimulation in the foot allows the body to relax and improve the toxin removal within the body
  • The removal of waste in the body helps repair any issues

The purpose of reflexology is to realign someone, both mentally and physically so the body can nurture and repair itself.

Reflexology as a treatment differentiates the body into zones. Each zone aligns different parts of the body, such as the big toe being aligned with the throat and nose.

By applying pressure to the correct zone of the foot, the body sends a calming sensation from the nerves in this area to the central nervous system. The body then understands it needs to adjust the tension level in this area. Once the body is in a relaxed state, the organs are functioning at their best, allowing for increased blood supply. This brings additional oxygen and nutrients to the zone to improve waste removal.

What are the Possible Benefits?

  • Increased energy
  • Reduced severity of migraines & headaches
  • Speed up recovery after an injury or surgery
  • Relief from anxiety, insomnia & stress
  • Improves brain health and blood circulation

What are the Possible Side Effects?

Although reflexology is generally safe for everyone, some people experience side effects such as fatigue and nausea. This is a very natural response after a reflexology treatment due to the increased removal of toxins. The symptoms normally pass within 30-60 minutes and a light meal paired with drinking plenty of water can help speed up the recovery.

If you would like more information to find out if reflexology is suitable for you, consult your local physician.

What to Expect During a Reflexology Treatment

  • Sessions will normally last between 30-60 minutes
  • The reflexologist may play soothing music & burn oils or candles
  • You may prefer to either close your eyes & relax, or chat to the therapist
  • You will be advised to drink plenty of water (normally about 8 glasses) within the next 24 hours after your treatment to help remove toxins from your body
  • The reflexologist may apply a cream or powder to allow an easy working surface, as well as a more comfortable treatment

You will need to remove your shoes, socks or stockings, and it is suggested you wear loose, comfortable clothes so you feel relaxed.

The reflexologist will ask questions about your health, diet and any problems you may have noticed. They will then examine your hands and feet, and have you recline in your seat or place your feet on a stool.

The treatment will then begin with light massage techniques and progress onto pressure being applied to the reflex points. The pressure should be firm but never painful.

You may feel a release of energy or sensations throughout your body inline with the pressure point.
