Waking up earlier can have its benefits!

You convince yourself that you're going to wake up earlier. You set the alarm and get into bed, ready to wake up refreshed. The alarm rings, you hit 'snooze' and lie in bed until the last possible moment. If you're familiar with this cycle, read on! Changing things up can be exceptionally difficult, especially when changing routine means getting out of your comfy cocoon earlier. Luckily, we've done our research and provided a list of some perks to getting up earlier, as well as handy hints on how to achieve this seemingly impossible task!

The benefits of waking up earlier

Better grades

In a 2008 Texas University study, it was found that students who identified themselves as “morning people” averaged a full point higher on their GPA’s than those who were “night owls”. That could make the difference between a credit and a distinction!

Increased productivity

Whether with your school, work or home life, waking up earlier allows you more time for important stuff. You’ll find yourself with extra time to organise your day, do some exercise or finish a project. You may also find the quality of your work to increase as well.

Better breakfasts

If you’re one of many that reach for a coffee on your way out the door, or skip breakfast altogether, it’s definitely time to change that! When you wake up earlier, you have plenty of extra time to prepare a delicious, wholesome brekky that’ll have you ready to take on a big day.

How to actually wake up earlier

Try this 30-day challenge:

This challenge is quite simple, but can prove challenging in the beginning. Named the 30-day 6am challenge, this challenge dares you to wake up at 6am every morning, regardless of tiredness, for the next 30 days. The idea seems easy enough, but you’re probably already considering the consequences you may face after accepting the challenge. Here are a few tips to get you through it:

Put your alarm at the other end of the room: horrible, but effective. Placing your alarm out of arm’s reach will force you to get out of bed to turn it off. There, you’ve already done the hardest part!

Have a purpose: it’s no use waking up early and dawdling for an hour or so. The night before, set a task for the morning, whether it be going for a walk or run, preparing a great lunch or working on a personal project.

Adjust the challenge to suit your routine: 6am may be the time you already get up. Then again, it may be way too early of a time for you, depending on when your day kicks off. 6am isn’t set in stone, so play around with it, just be sure to keep it challenging for you!
